Diversity in the workplace is essential, especially when your job requires meeting men from all different backgrounds. Joseph’s Home, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, provides a nurturing, caring environment for men without resources who have acute medical needs, helping them heal and achieve independence. Joseph’s Home selected Jeff Snowden to serve as their 2018 Summer Fellow, a program of Catholic Community Connection (CCC). Jeff, a veteran, has extensive experience working for the Navy’s Department of Defense.

Having recently relocated to the Cleveland area, Jeff applied for the fellowship as an avenue for networking and learning about area non-profits. Jeff feels that Cleveland provides a “wide window” for opportunity and he has “making connections” a priority at this point in his education.

The CCC Summer Fellows Program pairs each Fellow with a mentor that is familiar with the ministry and offers support to the Fellow. Jeff spoke highly of meeting with his mentor, Sister Regina Fierman, CSA. They met for lunch in the cafeteria at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. Sister Regina introduced him a few of the other Sisters and they enjoyed a long insightful conversation. His mentor explained that she would be here for Jeff if he needed anything and will continually show interest in in his efforts while cheering him along the way.

When asked about his time at Joseph’s Home, Jeff explained that he is most impressed with the resilience of the residents and the hard work of the Joseph’s Home staff. He commented, “Their education and expertise is quite impressive.” This is the essential and unique set of skills necessary for providing care of the residents. The biggest challenge he faced was trying to get a handle on Medicaid billing. He worked on that project with his supervisor and was pleased to find that his research put him in touch with people in facilities comparable to Joseph’s Home. Jeff was very eager to learn how they managed their paperwork.

Jeff, along with Summer Fellow Tom McCartney, organized the Joseph’s Home Service Day, which occurred on July 20. The service day consisted of the Catholic Community Connection Summer Fellows hosting a cookout and spending time with Joseph’s Home residents.

Jeff plans to graduate from Notre Dame College in 2019 with a degree in Human Resource Administration. Jeff was proud to be selected for the Fellowship. CCC wishes him well as he works to complete his degree.
