This summer, we welcome Alexis Saltis as one of this year’s Catholic Community Connection Summer Fellows! Alexis is serving as the Marketing and Development intern at the Village of St. Edward, with senior living facilities located in Fairlawn, Wadsworth and Green.

Alexis is a rising senior at John Carroll University, where she double majors in Integrated Marketing Communications and in Italian language studies. Her hometown is Akron, Ohio and she is a graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School. As she looks ahead to post graduation, Alexis is focused on pursuing a career that provides meaningful work to both others and herself.

Alexis first heard about the Catholic Community Connection’s Summer Fellows Program through one of her friends at John Carroll working in the Center for Service and Social Action. Her friend knew that Alexis was looking for an internship opportunity which would have a positive impact on others. Alexis followed her friend’s lead, applied for the position and was extended the offer to intern at the Village of St. Edward during the summer.

Through her internship experience, Alexis is learning about all of the elements which go into fundraising. One of the main projects she has been involved with is assisting with organizations and logistics for the Village of St. Edward’s fundraiser. This is the first fundraiser the Village has had in several years. The money raised through the fundraiser is going towards building a wellness garden, which will include a meditation space, shuffle board and playground for residents to bring their grandchildren when they visit. Alexis shared, “This has been my first time helping with a fundraiser this big. It has been incredible to see how involved the residents have been with this, as they want to ensure this is something which will be available for those who come to the Village of St. Edward for years to come.”

One of the most meaningful aspects of her experience has been the lessons that she has learned about the importance of making personal connections with others. As she has been working with her supervisor (Annette Walters), Alexis has been moved to see the close interaction between the staff and the residents. “Everyone here is one big family. It amazes me to see how my supervisor will stop what she is doing to catch up with the residents and ask them how their day is going.”

Alexis’ mentor at the Village of St. Edward is Sr. Marilyn Ambrosic, OP. Alexis has enjoyed her time with Sister and felt that she has been able to learn from her example. “Sr. Marilyn is very patient with the residents. Being with her has taught me that there is always time to have a conversation with someone and sometime those moments which may not be on your daily “to-do” list are the most critical as they are opportunity to help others encounter the love of God.”

Alexis shared that this was the kind of meaningful work that she was looking to do and her position at the Village of St. Edward is a dream come true! “It is amazing to be surrounded by a team of staff members who embrace the mission in everything that they do and treat the residents like their own family members. This place feels like home to me and I am so blessed to be here.”
