It is a delight to introduce to you one of our Summer Fellows, Marie Steinkuhl. Marie is serving as the Human Resource and Administrative intern at Regina Health Center in Richfield, Ohio.
Marie is planning to graduate in spring of 2024 from John Carroll University. She is majoring in Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience. She is a work-study student in JCU’s Campus Ministry Department and serves on their retreat team. Marie also works as a Center for Service and Social Action Liaison, driving students to and from service sites and leading them in reflection about their experiences. In 2022, she participated in the “Summer in the City” internship.
Marie applied for this fellowship because she feels drawn to exploring things in her college career that are in more of her niche. She wanted to see what it is like to work in a religious setting before going out into the “real world” or corporate world. The Catholic Faith has been beautiful in her life experience, so she wanted to try working in a Catholic environment.
In her fellowship, Marie reports she does a lot with recruitment and hiring. In addition, she is working on a DEI project to promote an inclusive culture at Regina Health Center. She is making a bulletin board to leave behind (per request of her supervisor) that will have different colored hands along the border and will have a quote to celebrate everyone and promote the sense of belonging at Regina.
Marie very much appreciates that her supervisor genuinely cares about and trusts her opinion, and wants her feedback. “My supervisor, Joyce Haynes, has been a role model for how to be a leader. I love that she is always so attentive to anyone she interacts with.” Marie enjoys having the time during her lunch break to walk around the campus and explore while wandering with her thoughts. “I love having the time to step back and take in everything I’m experiencing at my internship.” Marie also loves her time with her mentor (Sr. Mary O’Grady, CSA). “She tells it how it is and is always there for me. I love having a mentor and that designated special relationship.”
Marie says she feels much invested in and it makes her want to invest in other people.
In the future, she hopes to participate in work that cultivates community. “That could be in a variety of ways, even in just building community in the team that you’re on.”
